UK-Ireland Digital Humanities Association Mailing List
Moderation Guidelines
The list is open for anyone to join. To register, you need to subscribe to our JISCMail list and confirm your email. Once you have done so, you can start posting by sending emails to uk-ie-digitalhumanities@jiscmail.ac.uk. You will asked to confirm your message and then it will be distributed to the community.
Before posting a message, please read the guidelines below to help keep posts appropriate and relevant for the community.
An archive of past messages is available at the UK-Ireland Digital Humanities Association JISCMail page.
These guidelines draw on the guidelines of the Museums Computing Group (MCG), Digital Modern Languages, and SHARP-L mailing lists, among others and we are grateful to those who shared their experience.
What is the list for?
The UK-Ireland Digital Humanities Association mailing list is a common platform for those working in the digital arts and humanities, the cultural and creative sector, and related industries to share projects and outputs, research discoveries, community events, recruitment opportunities, partnership opportunities, and calls. The list is open to anyone in the world and although rooted in the UK and Irish digital humanities communities, encourages connections with others working in the field wherever they are based. The list is hosted on JISCMail and is moderated by the UK-Ireland Digital Humanities Association, with support from the Digital Humanities Institute at the University of Sheffield and the School of Advanced Study, University of London.
Posting Guidelines
This is not a legal contract, and should only be observed as a guide to conduct. Disputes, concerns and feedback on these guidelines should be sent to uk-ie.digitalhumanities@sas.ac.uk. The Association retains the right to make the final decision about the suitability of any post.
We are also happy to field questions if you would like advice on a specific question related to the list.
Moderation
- The moderators reserve the right, but have no obligation, to moderate any content posted to the list and enforce these guidelines.
- Individuals are responsible for the content they post to the list.
- Please note that posts to the list cannot be deleted or modified once distributed to members’ accounts.
- For the purposes of this trial period, moderation will be provided by the UK-Ireland Digital Humanities Association via the School of Advanced Study and the Digital Humanities Institute at the University of Sheffield.
- The moderators will have the right to remove posts from the archive if they violate these guidelines. If they do so, they will provide a written notification to the poster. They may also ban the poster from the list if they feel it is appropriate (for example, due to repeated violations or particularly inappropriate behavior). If you object to a decision made by the moderators, you may appeal it to the Executive Committee of the Association. All decisions made by the Executive Committee will be final.
Content
- You are responsible for assessing the safety of following any external links contained in messages sent to the list.
- List members come from a huge variety of backgrounds. To reach the widest possible audience, please expand acronyms and provide short definitions for discipline-specific jargon.
- Content should be limited to announcements and calls, including but not limited to: projects and outputs, research discoveries, community events (e.g. conferences), recruitment opportunities (e.g. job adverts and studentships), partnership opportunities (e.g. consortium building for collaborative research), and calls (e.g. for participants or for help).
- Although we recognise the value of back-and-forth discussions, we believe there are other better venues for those conversations and ask that any follow-up discussions take place off of the list. If useful for the community, summaries of these off-list knowledge sharing conversations may be shared on the list.
- Content should broadly be of interest to those working in digital arts and humanities, the cultural and creative sector, and related industries in Ireland and the United Kingdom. While posts are welcome (indeed encouraged) from anywhere in the world, we ask that you consider whether a specific message would be appropriate for this group.
- Job, paid internship and volunteer post advertisements are permitted. All job posts should include the rate of pay for the role. Where volunteer roles are posted, they should not be replacing the work of paid staff and should be of genuine mutual benefit to the organisation and the volunteer. You may wish to consult UCL’s Internships, Work Experience and Volunteering Policy as an example of good practice.
- Calls for papers and notices of conferences are permitted once or twice per event. If your conference title contains an acronym, please spell it out so that people new to it have a sense of the topic. Notices of commercially-run training and courses are permitted where they clearly meet the needs of building capacity in the sector.
- We recommend the subject line of your email include a category marker (i.e. CFP for calls for papers, Event for events, Job for recruitment opportunities, etc) to make it easier for users to find your message in the archive and identify the subject of the message.
Conduct
- All users should be respectful and professional in their use of the list. We are committed to providing a safe, open and welcoming environment for all where those with different backgrounds and lived experiences feel able to contribute to the conversation. All list users contribute to creating and maintaining a spirit of inclusivity.
- We have zero tolerance for any form of harassment, intimidation, or discrimination, including but not limited to offensive communication related to age, gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, language, race, religion or belief, or political opinion. Any such messages will not be tolerated and will result in your removal from the list.
- We also ask that you don’t advertise commercial services (yours or otherwise) without invitation, by which we mean promotion of a paid-for product or service unless they clearly meet the needs of building capacity in the sector. Please refer to the JISCMail Acceptable Use policies for their policies on posting
- The moderators are not responsible for user conduct. You are solely responsible for your interaction with other members of the list.
- Please post content only on your own behalf, and not for any third party.
- Do not post content by any automated means. Users must post all content personally and manually.
Copyright
- Make sure you have the right to share or distribute information and content on the list which, for these purposes, should be considered public. This onus is on you and not on the list moderators.
Use of data
- The collection of users’ personal information (including, but not limited to email addresses, IP addresses and telephone numbers) is not allowed for any purpose.
By participating in the list, you are also bound by the JISCMail policies. JISCMail also suggests list etiquette. We ask that you refer to the JISCMail Acceptable Use policies for guidance on posting, particularly:
- JISCMail does not allow spam, junk mail, chain letters or other unsolicited bulk email, commercial or otherwise, on any list
- The posting of unsolicited commercial or advertising material is not allowed
- Messages sent to JISCMail lists should be courteous and appropriate, and should not disrupt the flow of discussion on a list.
If you do not want to accept these guidelines, you may reject them by ceasing all access and use of the JISCMail list.
If you have any questions, please email uk-ie.digitalhumanities@sas.ac.uk.
