Help Shape a Digital Sustainability Standard for the Humanities and Social Sciences
The Digital Humanities Climate Coalition (DHCC) is inviting researchers and practitioners from across the humanities, social sciences, and cultural heritage sectors to help shape a new Humanities and Social Sciences Digital Sustainability Accreditation Standard.
The Standard launches on SPARKHub, UKRI’s new open-access platform for greening research, later this year with an entry-level ‘Bronze’ accreditation. We now want to co-produce the next accreditation levels with the communities who will use them, so that they work across disciplines.
We are running six standalone online workshops (90 minutes each, all times GMT):
- Tuesday 3 November, 13:00
- Friday 13 November, 13:00
- Monday 30 November, 13:00
- Thursday 3 December, 10:00
- Thursday 3 December, 13:00
- Thursday 17 December, 15:00
Each workshop introduces the Standard, asks whether the entry level fits your discipline/field, and then focuses on one of the Standard’s six ‘Bronze’ Actions areas, chosen by vote on the day:
- Establish environmental sustainability governance
- Review policies and commit to equipment reuse
- Adopt sustainable file formats and data retention practices
- Align web presence with sustainability and accessibility principles
- Assess and justify use of computationally intensive methods
- Plan for responsible archiving and reuse of outputs and hardware
Together we will explore what the highest accreditation level could look like for that Action area, and what an interim step would be.
No prior knowledge of DHCC, SPARKHub, or the Standard is needed, and you can come to as many or as few workshops as you like.
